Lens-Replacement-OptionsPremium Lens Implants: Intraocular Lenses

An Intraocular Lens (IOL) is a lens implanted in the eye for any of the following reasons:

  • To replace a crystalline lens that has been clouded over by a cataract (cataract surgery)
  • As a form of refractive surgery (such as monovision for presbyopia) to change the eye’s optical power
  • To correct nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism

The Surgical Procedure

The eye’s natural crystalline lens is removed and an IOL is inserted through a small incision. At Great Plains Eye Specialists, we offer laser-based methods using VICTUS femtosecond laser technology for lens replacement. The procedure can be done under local anesthesia; you remain awake throughout the operation which usually takes less than 30 minutes. The recovery period is about 4-6 weeks.

Multifocal IOLs

Multifocal IOL

Traditional IOLs are monofocal, meaning they offer vision at one distance only (far, intermediate or near). Traditional IOLs mean that you must wear eyeglasses or contact lenses in order to read, use a computer or view objects in the middle distance, especially if you are already experiencing presbyopia.
Multifocal and accommodating IOLs offer the possibility of seeing well at more than one distance, without glasses or contacts, by improving the reception of light rays in the eye or by working with the muscles of the eye to adjust or accommodate for near, medium or distant vision.
IOLs and multifocal IOLs can be an option if LASIK is not recommended and can provide good vision without dependence on eyeglasses or contacts.
