How Long Does Cataract Surgery Take?

How_Long_Does_Cataract_Surgery_Take.jpgAs a person ages, their eye’s natural lens can become cloudy, gradually losing its normal transparency.  This is called a cataract.  Without cataract surgery, the cloudiness can become so bad that it can lead to blindness.

Surgery to correct a cataract usually takes under an hour, and typically takes at most 30 to 45 minutes.   Cataract surgeries, for the most part, are done using anesthetic eye drops to numb the eye.  While some people may be anxious about work being performed on their eye, a sedative can be used to induce a sense of relaxation.  Recovery is usually fairly quick and most patients are satisfied with the procedure.

Cataracts cannot be reversed with medications.  Surgery is the treatment of choice.  The cataract experts at Great Plains Eye Specialists in Rapid City can discuss your surgical options.  Please call our office for more information.
