Information about Myopia Treatment

Have you heard of myopia but not sure what it is?  Myopia, also known as nearsightedness or shortsightedness, is a condition of the eye where the light that comes in does not directly focus on the retina but in front of it. This causes the images or objects that a person is looking at when at a distance to be out of focus, but in focus when looking at a close object.  Nearsightedness is a very common problem among the populous in the United States.

Symptoms or signs of nearsightedness include squinting, headaches and eye strain.  Typically, a myopia patient will have trouble seeing street signs but little trouble with up close vision.

Myopia treatment includes correction with glasses, contact lenses or surgery.  With LASIK surgery, which is the most common surgical treatment for myopia, a thin flap is created on the surface of the cornea, a laser removes some corneal tissue, and then the flap is returned to its original position.  Myopia treatment by LASIK typically delivers satisfactory results for the patient.
